Mitsubishi WWII Slave Labor Camps
Yes, a few - at least 4, slave labor camps seem to have been operated for the purpose of providing labor to Mitsubishi. Guards took care of the POWs during non-working hours but for the majority of the day, about 6 days a week, these hapless POWs were at the mercy of Mitsubishi supervisors.
These camps were Sendai #3, Sendai #6, Fukuoka #14, Osaka #4. A brief available description follows for some of them:
Mitsubishi Mining was the company over 500 American and allied POWs worked at.
MIYAGI-ken, KURIHARA-gun, UGUISUSAWA-mura
Hosokura mine was owned and operated by Mitsubishi Mining Co, (MITSUBISHI KOGYO HOSOKURA KOZAN) during WWII. Enslaved by Mitsubishi were 231 American POWs and 3 civilian Americans who were forced to mine and produce lead and zinc.
Camp was 1850 meters (1.15 miles) from ground Zero.
Known facts: 24 Australians in camp (survivors of Tamahoku Maru, sunk 24 June 1944), all survived. Roster included Dutch, English, Australian and American soldiers. They all worked for Mitsubishi Iron Foundry.
