Abstract: EEOC Responds to Mitsubishi Monitors Report

Commission Says Control of Sexual Harassment in Future May Depend on Auto Maker's Adoption of Recommendations

May 23, 2001. The final report in accordance with the Consent Decree which resolved the federal agency's landmark sexual harassment case against Mitsubishi Motor Manufacturing of America (No. 96-1192) was released. The monitors are Nancy B. Kreiter, Research Director of Women Employed in Chicago; Joyce E. Tucker, formerly an EEOC Commissioner and now a principal of Tucker Spearman and Associates in Alexandria, Virginia; and George F. Galland, Jr., a member of the Miner, Barnhill and Galland, P.C. law firm in Chicago.

Report noted that while "its [Mitsubishi Motors] program...has not been free of problems" , the company seemed committed to its obligation and "serious incidents of sexual harassment are rare." EEOC too noted that "although our litigation and the Consent Decree did not create a perfect world at Mitsubishi" working lives of many women have been changed for better as a result. It added that "the test now is whether the company can maintain and build upon its success by continuing to implement the recommendations of the monitors. The future at Mitsubishi is now truly in the company's own hands. We hope it will resist complacency and back-sliding and will continue its efforts to become a model employer."

The monitor's report notes that it "remind[s] the company of the need to remain vigilant and proactive" in combating sexual harassment and added :"We believe that the investigation, monitoring, tracking, enforcement and follow-up mechanisms that were established and have worked well under the Decree are necessary to prevent retrogression."
