Market Posts Record Gains
US auto sales during July 2005 were on a near-record pace, with almost all major manufacturers registering their highest monthly sales in years. GM, Ford and Chrysler saw their combined sales jump up more than 26 percent when compared to July 2004. This was large attributable to their employee rebate offer extended to all consumers.
Foreign auto makers too registered near-record sales. Toyota, Nissan, Honda and others saw their sales climb. Mitsubishi was an exception though, as expected.
Mitsubishi seems to be dying in the USA
2006 Eclipse was released just about a month ago with great amounts spent on its promotion. Its sales showed some improvement over that of last year. This was to be expected. However, the total number is still small and what will happen when the promotions stop, the novelty of the new model wears off, and when the overspent consumers reduce their vehicle purchases in the fall and winter?
Lancer and Montero lines are going down at a fast pace. Montero line is to be discontinued and Lancer should follow similar course, if the poor sales pattern continue.
Total Sales Down
Mitsubishi Galant sold 2,522 units compared to 2,993 units in 2004 July (and 6,687 units in July 2003). It was redesigned last year with great promotion. We expect its sales to continue to decline.
It sold 1,358 Lancer vehicles in July 2005. It had sold 2,236 Lancer units (excluding Lancer Evolution and Lancer Sportback) in 2004 July.
New 2006 Eclipse sales were up! To 2,331 unit. However, it is worth noting that in July 2003, Mitsubishi had sold 2,821 units of its aging Eclipse Coupe. We expect Eclipse sales to decline on month-to-month basis.
SUVs sold 3,483 units. In July 2004, Mitsubishi had sold 3,895 SUVs and in 2003 July it sold 7,794 SUVs.
Total vehicle sales went down to 10,375 units from 11,192 units sold in July 2004 and 22,881 units sold in July 2003.
