May 2004 Sales Down 56 Percent
Japan Automobile Dealers Association reported that Mitsubishi Motors sold 4,213 new vehicles in japan during the month of May, registering a sharp 56 percent decline compared to May of 2003's sales figure. This does not include minivehicles figures.
It performed badly in minivehicle market too, selling just 10,454 units, a decline of 27 percent compared to May of 2003.
Mitsubishi Fuso and Bus had a decline of 'mere' 10 percent to 4,400 units.
MMC's Projections vs Actual Sales
The automaker had projected total domestic sales for the fiscal year 2004 to be 297,000 units including those with 660 cc or less-sized engines, the minivehicles. However, the current decline of about 38 percent is more than twice the projected decline of 16 percent and it faces possibility of worsening situation because of the latest recall regarding its Pajero Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) since it had outlined Pajero and Lancer to be the main models for its revival.
MMC has fallen from 4th to 5th to 7th - behind Fuji Heavy and Suzuki Motors.
