Compared to 2003 April, industry-wide total passenger sales fell by 4.5 percent to 200,955 unit during April 2004, according to JAMA, Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association. Mitsubishi Motors' auto sales were down by 21 percent to 5,759 units, in contrast. [Note: These figures do not include mini vehicles, i.e., cars with engine displacement of 660cc or lower.]
Minivehicles sales went up by 6.1 percent to 139,806. Almost all manufacturers registered increase in sales. Except Mitsubishi Motors, which saw its mini vehicle sales fall by 18 percent.
According to report on May 27th, MMC's domestic sales in the month dropped 19.0 percent to about 16,000 passenger car vehicles. Its Colt compact car and the eK minicar are mainly to blame. In terms of domestic market share this translates to 4.4 percent compared to 5.3 percent a year ago. May sales could be worse because of new waves of recall scandals.
[mitsubishisucks.com thinks that a large portion of MMC's sales might be coming from Mitsubishi group's employees and suppliers who must be under pressure to buy Mitsubishi cars. Otherwise, its sales are real dismal.]
