Magna 2001

Offset Frontal Impact: "The passenger compartment was substantially deformed in the offset crash test... After the crash high manual effort was required to open the driver's door but the rear door required tools... the metal arm of the steering column adjuster is a hazard to the driver's left knee. The glove box latch caused a cut to the passenger dummy's leg and an invalid knee displacement reading. The rear seat cushion became dislodged under the child restraints during the crash and could pose of hazard to rear seat occupants. "

Side Impact Results: "The centre pillar and the side doors were pushed inwards substantially... The back of the driver's head glanced the centre pillar then rebounded. (no front pasenger)"

Overall Mitsubishi Performance: 3/5. "The Mitsubishi Magna performed marginally in the offset crash test. The passenger compartment was substantially deformed. There was a risk of serious chest injury for both the driver and passenger. Protection from lower leg injury was poor for the driver... there was a high risk of life threatening chest injury for the driver. "


Magna 1996 - 1997

Full Frontal Impact: "The driver's head hit the steering wheel with a severe impact... The driver's knees hit the steering column and dash. The passenger's knees hit the glove box... After the crash moderate effort was required to open the driver's door... A fuel tank leak was observed after the crash. Mitsubishi has examined the vehicle and claimed that this resulted from a quality control problem and it was not a design-related problem. "

Offset Frontal Impact: "The driver's head hit the steering wheel with a severe impact... The driver's knees hit the steering column and dash. The passenger's knees hit the glove box... All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash a crowbar was needed to open the driver's door."

Overall Mitsubishi Performance: Marginal. Protection from serious head injury was poor for the driver ... In the offset crash test there was substantial intrusion into the driver's floor space, which meant poor protection from lower leg injury.


Note: A test was conducted on the above model with driver side airbag. Driver was more protected .
